Vietnam is a land of handicrafts thanks to the hardworking, dexterous, and creative qualities of the Vietnamese people. Since the eleventh century, fine handicraft articles of Vietnam have been exported to countries overseas. In
2002, handicraft export value reached USD 330.994 million in which export to EU took the lead with USD 149.503 million then to Japan and the USA with USD 43.176 million and USD 33.830 million respectively.
For the time being, wide range of Vietnam handicrafts has gained presence in the world market and appreciation by international customers. It was listed as one of the ten biggest export turnover of the country with the participation of different economic sectors. From the very first number of 50 countries in 1998, the current markets which Vietnamese handicrafts has entered already doubled up to more than 100 countries and territories in 2001 and 133 in 2002, including such significant and reliable markets as Japan, European Community, the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, etc.
